Karthik's son, Gautham, was signed on for the lead role, making his acting debut, while Samantha was chosen to play the female lead.Mani Ratnam roped in Arjun, who contrary to media reports would not play a villain, as well as Lakshmi Manchu, daughter of Mohan Babu to essay supporting roles.In late December 2011, Pasupathy and Lal were confirmed to be part of the film. It was widely reported that Arvind Swamy would play a very crucial role, but the actor denied his presence in the film.Thambi Ramaiah would also appear in pivotal role.
Kadal will be set in the backdrop of fishermen in and around Rameswaram. Jeyamohan, who has inked scripts for Angadi Theru and Naan Kadavul, wrote the script of Kadal. Rajiv Menon was recruited as the cinematographer,and Ratnam's norm composer A. R. Rahman would score the music. Earlier, Pookadai was considered as the film's title.

With the makers rubbishing the buzz that Mani Ratnam's next is 'Pookadai', Mani Ratnam has officially announced that this film will be titled 'Kadal', a title apt for the theme as it focuses on the lives of fisher folk.
This film that will have Karthik's son Gautham and Samantha Prabhu in the lead roles is a romantic entertainer. Samantha is called as the 'Lady Luck' in Telugu film industry for all her three films have been declared blockbuster hits.
The team will soon be leaving to the Andamans for a month long schedule where important songs and scenes will be canned. It's a romantic entertainer where Arjun Sarja, Thambi Ramiah and Lakshmi Manchu will be seen in pivotal roles. Music is by Isai Puyal AR Rahman, of course.
The film will focus on fishermen and showcase how fisher folk from Tamil Nadu get shot in the sea by the Sri Lankan navy and has a love plot intertwined with this.
This film will be released big post this summer by Madras Talkies.

Ace director Mani Ratnam after Raavan has announced the title of his new film as Kadal.

It will be the official launch pad of Karthik’s son Gautham as her opposite the hot and happening Samantha.
Earlier there were rumours in the media that the film was titled Pookadai, but now it is official that the title is Kadal.

It is said to be romantic film set against the backdrop of a fishing village in south Tamil Nadu. The buzz is that Mani has based the movie on Tamil Nadu fishermen who go out into the seas and get shot by Sri Lankan navy and the conflict that follows.
Kadal will have ‘Action King’ Arjun playing an important role along with Lakshmi Manchu and Thambi Ramaiah also are in the supporting cast.
Mani has also roped in his favourite music director AR Rahman to compose for the film which has lyrics by Vairamuthu and his son Madhan karky.
Already one of the songs has been composed. Rajeev Menon who last worked with the master in Bombay has been roped in as the cinematographer.

It's not 'Pookadai' for Mani!

As always Mani Ratnam is tight-lipped about his next venture and there's more suspense than ever about his forthcoming offering for Mani is back to what he is best at, weaving an out- and-out romantic entertainer. It was earlier widely speculated that this project titled 'Pookadai' will feature Karthik's son Gautham and Samantha in the lead roles with film's music by AR Rahman, of course. It is now said that director Saran's assistant, Sathish had registered this title for his directorial venture about five years back and the budding talent complained about this to the directors' association, to which Mani's team has reportedly responded saying they haven't yet zeroed in on any title and hence they do not want the title 'Pookadai'! With a guessing game on the lead lady until a while ago, with this, there might be a guessing game on the title of Mani's venture too, until he makes an official announcement.

Mani Ratnam picks the National award winner?

There is a buzz in Kollywood that Mani Ratnam wants to have Thambi Ramaiah in his forthcoming film which has Gautham as the lead star. Thambi Ramaiah won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Mynaa and this is likely to fetch the actor a role in Mani’s film.
The director is on the lookout for a character artiste who can double up as a comedian and he may rope in Thambi Ramaiah for this purpose.

Mani picks Arjun, but not as villain

It's true that Mani Ratnam has signed Arjun for his forthcoming film, but not to play the role of a baddie as reported
in a section of media. "I am there in Mani's movie. However, I am not doing the villain's role," says a happy Action King, as this is the first time for him to work with the ace director. Tentatively titled 'Pookadai', the film has yesteryear hero Karthik's son Gautham as protagonist. And a guessing game is still on as to who will be the heroine. A tough contest is on between R Parthipan's daughter Keerthana and Radha's younger daughter Thulasi, it is learnt. Remember Keerthana was a part of Mani's 'Kannathil Muthamittal' when she was a school going child and hence shares a good rapport with the filmmaker. And Radha was recently quoted as saying that her daughter would sure accept an acting offer from Mani Ratnam. Ace writer Jeyamohan has penned the script for the film, which will have musical score by AR Rahman. Rajeev Menon will crank the camera. "A love story set in the backdrop of Rameswaram, it will deal with the lives of fishermen there," say sources close to the development.
